December 17, 2002 – Mountain View, CA – Blackwell’s Book Services (www.blackwell.com), a leading book supplier to the library market, today announced that its Collection Manager purchasing system for libraries now includes a full-text preview feature powered by ebrary® (www.ebrary.com), a leading provider of information distribution and retrieval technology that serves publishers and libraries worldwide.

Available today, the new technology helps publishers increase sales of print books to libraries by showcasing exact replicas of books, particularly pre-publication and frontlist titles. Additionally, it allows libraries to make more informed purchases by searching and browsing books in full-text before ordering, thus reducing the number of returns.

“By partnering with ebrary, Collection Manager advances to another level by allowing print books to be searched and browsed in full-text before purchase by libraries,” said Dan Halloran, President and CEO of Blackwell’s Book Services. “Because ebrary is based on the portable document format (PDF), the de facto industry standard, publishers can efficiently submit their titles into Collection Manager and market them to librarians even before they appear in print. Not only does this increase sales and lower returns, it also can greatly reduce costs associated with printing and mailing sample copies or notification slips. ebrary brings tremendous market value to Blackwell’s, and we look forward in continuing to deepen our relationship with them over time.”

“Partnering with Blackwell’s is a very strategic move for ebrary for a number of reasons: It provides a new channel for our publishing partners who need a secure and effective way to showcase frontlist titles to librarians in full-text; provides us the ability to dramatically increase the value of our library products by allowing publishers to automatically migrate books from Collection Manager into our ebrarian® for Libraries database on their own timetables; and enables us to build branding and adoption by integrating with a service that is used by more than 15,000 libraries throughout the world,” said Tom Turvey, VP, Content & Business Development for ebrary. “Blackwell’s is a perfect fit for our technology, and for our company.”

“Ever since we started ebrary we have promised publishers that we'd help them utilize the Internet to increase sales of their physical books," said Christopher Warnock, CEO of ebrary. "This partnership with Blackwells is the latest development in this continuing quest."
