ebrary® Launches New Fee–Based Research Site Featuring Over 20,000 Titles
ebrary Discover Combines Full-Text Books, Sheet Music, Reports and Other Authoritative Documents with Advanced Research Technology

May 13, 2003 – Palo Alto, CA – Independent researchers who do not have access to ebrary’s database collections through their library may now pay for an individual account. ebrary (www.ebrary.com), a leading provider of information distribution and retrieval services, today announced the availability of ebrary Discover, a new fee-based website that provides independent researchers with anytime, anywhere access to over 20,000 authoritative titles including books in full-text, sheet music, reports and other authoritative documents from more than 150 leading publishers such as Cambridge University Press, Random House, Inc., and The McGraw-Hill Companies. Discover ebrary at http://discover.ebrary.com.

ebrary Discover also offers ebrary InfoTools™, the company’s sophisticated research technology that provides word-level interaction. Simply by selecting words, independent researchers may instantly link to additional information within the ebrary collection, or access resources on the web such as definitions, encyclopedic abstracts, biographical information, translations and more.

“Discover is designed to showcase the capabilities of our products to libraries, connect patrons and students to libraries that subscribe to our offerings, and provide a valuable service to individuals whose libraries are not ebrary subscribers,” said Christopher Warnock, CEO of ebrary. “Through Discover, we help libraries increase their patronage, enable individuals to find the authoritative information they need online, and build awareness of ebrary in the marketplace.”

In a separate press release issued today, ebrary announced that it is making a collection of approximately 100 full-text books and maps on the Middle East freely accessible online. Available today at http://discover.ebrary.com, the collection represents an invaluable resource for understanding Middle Eastern culture, politics, and history, as well as the great challenges facing nation-builders in the wake of the Iraq War. The press release is available at www.ebrary.com.

For a limited time, independent researchers may set up an individual account for as little as $5 for unlimited access to ebrary’s online collection. Unlike ebrary’s database collections for libraries, ebrary Discover requires a small fee for copying and printing text, which the company shares with its publishing partners. To keep the account active, researchers must maintain a minimum balance of $1.50.

Libraries that subscribe to ebrary databases pay an annual flat rate based on library type and size for unlimited simultaneous, multi-user access to growing collections of high-quality academic and general interest content that integrate with their existing ILS systems and other digital resources. Researchers may access ebrary databases through their library at no cost, and ebrary helps connect researchers with subscribing institutions. ebrary’s database collections for libraries also feature MARC records, reporting and usage statistics, and other library-specific features.

Among other benefits, ebrary Discover offers the following:
  • Quality content – ebrary offers over 20,000 full-text books, sheet music, reports, and other documents from over 150 leading publishers. The majority of ebrary’s titles were published within the last three years, and many have never before been available online.
  • Any time, anywhere access.
  • ebrary InfoTools™ – ebrary’s advanced research technology turns every word in every document into a highly interactive experience. Simply by selecting words or phrases, researchers can link to additional resources such as biographical information, word definitions and translations, maps, web searches, or other materials available through ebrary.
  • Full-text search and advanced navigation.
  • Bookmarks, highlighting, and annotations – Researchers can highlight text, take notes along side a document and store on a personal bookshelf for future reference.
  • Automatic bibliographical citations – When independent researchers pay to copy or print text, ebrary automatically includes a citation.
  • Continually growing collection – ebrary add new titles each week.
