ebrary Ships ebrarian 2.0 with 36 Libraries, Launches International Library Program
Yale University Library, Stanford University Libraries & Academic Information Resources and Peninsula Library System now Give Patrons Unlimited Access to High-Value Content and Advanced Research Tools with ebrarian

January 15, 2002 – Mountain View, CA – ebrary™ (www.ebrary.com), a leading provider of information distribution and retrieval services, today announced that it has launched ebrarian™ 2.0 with pilot customers including Stanford University Libraries & Academic Information Resources, Yale University Library, and the Peninsula Library System – a consortium of 34 public and community college libraries in Northern California. The company also today announced that it will globally roll out ebrarian™ 2.1 with advanced features specifically for libraries in Q1 2002.

With ebrarian, libraries can offer patrons unlimited multi-user access to authoritative books and other documents from more than 100 world-class publishers including The McGraw-Hill Companies, Random House, Harvard University Press, Cambridge University Press, and Penguin Classics as well as advanced research capabilities from the convenience of their computers. The ebrarian system is affordable, reliable, and integrates with existing catalog systems and other digital resources.

“A growing number of library patrons are demanding authoritative, digital content and expect the convenience of the Internet,” said Michael A. Keller, University Librarian & Director of Academic Resources, Stanford University. “With ebrary, we can now quickly, efficiently and cost-effectively meet our patrons’ needs.”

"Our library staff is eager to develop effective ways of delivering high-quality e-book content to our readers," noted Ann Okerson, Yale University's Associate University Librarian for Library Collections and Technical Services. "And, our participation in ebrary's pilot program will provide us with an important learning experience."

“ebrary will enable us to give an unlimited number of patrons simultaneous access to collections from any Internet-enabled computer, without having to purchase individual e-books or rely on e-book reading devices,” said Linda Crowe, Executive Director, Peninsula Library System. “The ebrarian solution will also soon integrate with our OPAC and other systems, which will allow us to better manage our digital resources across our consortium of libraries, reduce costs associated with inter-library loans and provide a higher level of service to our patrons. We are extremely pleased to be among the first to offer this exciting new technology.”

“ebrary’s goal is to help libraries cost-effectively and efficiently expand their collections beyond their physical shelves, while providing new distribution and revenue opportunities for our publishing partners,” said Christopher Warnock, ebrary’s CEO. “We are all very excited that Yale, Stanford and Peninsula Library System have chosen our solution and look forward to continually working with them and libraries worldwide to meet their growing needs for digital information and resources.”

The ebrarian Solution
ebrarian combines powerful software, research and comprehension capabilities at the word level and high-value, copyright protected content from more than 100 leading publishers.

Key features and benefits of ebrarian 2.1 for libraries will include the following:

Co-branded Website – The ebrarian service is delivered via a custom website, which ebrary creates, hosts and maintains. Co-branded websites never contain advertisements, and they can be customized with libraries’ logos and branding.

Integration – ebrarian integrates with libraries’ existing workflow, digital resources, and catalog and administrative processes, specifically through full MARC records for all titles in the ebrary repository.

Authoritative Content from World-Class Publishers – ebrary’s collection includes 5,000 titles in key subject areas such as Language & Literature, Social Science, Medicine, History, Science & Technology and Philosophy. The company is continuously expanding its collection.

Customizable Research Tools – ebrary’s InfoTools ™ technology makes it easy for patrons to find and use the information they need and interact with content at the word level. With InfoTools, libraries can create custom links to knowledge resources of their choice including definitions, biographical information, maps and translations as well as other digital resources within the library. Patrons can instantly access these resources when words or phrases are selected. The ebrarian solution also features online annotations, highlighting, bookmarks and more.

Accounting and Reporting Tools – Libraries can use real time activity reports to gain information on usage and transactions in order to make more informed collection development decisions.

PDF Workflow – ebrary’s product is based on the portable document format (PDF), which is used by the majority of printing houses worldwide. This enables ebrary to efficiently acquire frontlist titles at the source and quickly grow its collections. PDF technology also ensures that documents maintain the look and feel of the originals.

Pricing and Availability
ebrarian 2.1 will be available to libraries worldwide in Q1 2002. ebrary charges an annual license fee for implementation, technology license and maintenance. Exact pricing varies depending on the type of library and its size. For more information call 650-230-0700 or visit www.ebrary.com.
