ebrary Announces Strategic Content Agreement with Amsterdam University Press, Leading Academic Publisher in the Netherlands
Academic and Popular titles to be Made Available Online Through ebrary.com

Mountain View, Calif., January 16, 2001 – ebrary™, the authoritative source for online research, today announced that Amsterdam University Press will make all its titles available through ebrary.com. English books, including high level academic research works as well as more popular titles, will be the first priority. Subject areas in which AUP has particular strength include Art History, Political Science, Economics, History , Cultural Studies, Women’s Studies and Sociology.

ebrary is creating a rich collection of authoritative and valuable content that includes books, journals, maps, periodicals and digitally archived material, most of which was previously inaccessible via the Web. ebrary patrons will gain access to this content without having to pay membership or subscription fees. Using ebrary’s advanced search technologies, they can freely browse and search documents to find material relevant to their needs.

Using the photocopy analogy, ebrary patrons will pay to copy or print specific paragraphs, pages or chapters as needed. In this manner ebrary protects copyrights while providing publishers and authors with new revenue opportunities. By increasing the exposure of copyrighted material, ebrary encourages the purchase of hard-copy or electronic versions of titles which may be acquired through links to online and local booksellers.

AUP is the leading academic publisher in the Netherlands, providing a unique resource for scholars and scientists. AUP has an extensive sales, marketing and distribution network reaching academics, institutions and book shops throughout the world.

Pieter Gispen, Sales and Marketing Manager at AUP said, “This is a wonderful opportunity to make our collection available to a worldwide online audience through ebrary.com. We also like ebrary’s business model because we gain additional revenues from users doing research and through increased exposure of our titles.”

“Amsterdam University Press represents the highest standards of quality. This is exactly the kind of content that we want to provide our patrons on ebrary.com,” said Christopher Warnock, chief executive officer of ebrary. “AUP clearly understands the value of international distribution and ebrary can take their content to an even wider audience via the Internet.”

Amsterdam University Press is the only real university press in the Netherlands. The goal of the press is to continue to develop a high quality list of titles to serve the Dutch and international scholarly communities. AUP publishes high quality academic books and journals in English and Dutch for a world wide readership. Publishing over a wide range of subjects in the humanities and social sciences, titles vary from high level academic research works to more popular titles for the general public. Areas of particular strength are Art History, Film Studies, Cultural Studies, Women’s Studies and Sociology.

The high standards of the press are maintained through the scholarly appraisal of its editorial boards which consist of highly-respected academics from universities throughout the country.

About ebrary
ebrary revolutionizes research on the Web by combining copyright security, full-text search, innovative reference tools and a rich collection of authoritative content. ebrary patrons can browse, view and search documents without pre-payment or subscription fees. They pay only for the convenience of copying or printing the information they need, a model analogous to that of photocopying. Publishers gain control over new digital content revenue opportunities while working with their existing print production workflow. Libraries increase their collections with the availability of electronic books, journals, and archival works while making their own unique collections accessible to more patrons.
