ebrary Announces Strategic Content Agreement with Taylor & Francis,
International Academic Publisher

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Dec. 5, 2000 – ebrary™, the authoritative source for online research, today announced a contract in which Taylor & Francis, the international academic publisher, will make available the vast majority of both its ongoing frontlist and its 17,000 backlist titles in the humanities, social sciences, sciences and engineering, to all users of ebrary.

Taylor and Francis, established in 1798, has grown rapidly in the last ten years and now includes the imprints of Routledge, Garland Press, Spon Press and Psychology Press.

"Taylor & Francis is one of the world’s most respected publishers and has a long tradition of close ties with the academic community," said Christopher Warnock, chief executive officer of ebrary. "With this agreement, students, researchers and academics will have the opportunity to access and browse through Taylor & Francis’ range of titles, from any location at any time."

ebrary is creating a rich collection of authoritative and valuable content that includes books, journals, maps, periodicals and digitally archived material, most of which was previously inaccessible via the Web. ebrary patrons will gain access to this content without having to pay membership or subscription fees. Using ebrary’s advanced search technologies, they can freely browse and search documents to find material relevant to their needs.

Using the photocopy analogy, patrons will pay to copy or print specific paragraphs, pages or chapters as needed. In this manner ebrary protects copyrights while providing publishers and authors with new revenue opportunities. By increasing the exposure of copyrighted material, ebrary encourages the purchase of hard-copy or electronic versions of titles which may be acquired through links to online and local booksellers.

"Our link up with ebrary is consistent with our strategy to seek technology partners where appropriate in order to ensure that our scholarly material is disseminated to as wide an audience as possible," said Christoph Chesher, director of sales and marketing services for Taylor & Francis. "This contract follows closely on our decision to make all our titles available as e-books in 2001 alongside their traditional print versions."

"What particularly attracted us to ebrary was their recognition that we as publishers need to be able to differentiate charges for our content, in the same way as we do with physical books, on an ISBN by ISBN basis according to demand. ebrary’s sophisticated software allows us to set print-per-page charges and pay per use where appropriate in a way that provides good value for customers but still provides a fair return for our authors and shareholders. By acting as a facilitator, ebrary provides genuine added value to the academic community, whilst at the same time providing us with new revenues and with the pricing flexibility to ensure that our traditional revenue streams are not diminished or substituted."

About ebrary
ebrary revolutionizes research on the Web by combining copyright security, full-text search, innovative reference tools and a rich collection of authoritative content. ebrary patrons can browse, view and search documents without pre-payment or subscription fees. They pay only for the convenience of copying or printing the information they need, a model analogous to that of photocopying. Publishers gain control over new digital content revenue opportunities while working with their existing print production workflow. Libraries increase their collections with the availability of electronic books, journals, and archival works while making their own unique collections accessible to more patrons.
