What is an API?

An API or “application programming interface” provides a set of routines, protocols and tools for building software applications. APIs make it easier to develop programs by providing all of the necessary building blocks, which may be used individually or combined depending on the desired result.

The API of ebrary eXtend is essentially a set of internet URLs that customers and/or partners can access from their own Websites or programs to perform operations. For example, they can perform a search query and retrieve the results, which are most often returned in XML format.

How does eXtend work?

ebrary eXtend provide access to the high-level building blocks of the ebrary system: Partners and customers control behavior and display, ebrary provides the underlying technology. Basically, ebrary’s APIs are Internet URLs that customers or partners can access from their Websites or programs. These URLs take a standard form with optional parameters that customize the user’s request, and then the ebrary system returns the resulting information in XML format.

What are the benefits of ebrary eXtend?

With eXtend, libraries can provide remote, seamless access to ebrary content via their own library portals, eliminating barriers associated with multiple data sources and passwords. Among other benefits to libraries, ebrary content may be included in OpenURL and federated search initiatives, through use of the ebrary eXtend APIs.

ebrary partners and customers benefit from the ability to integrate ebrary content and functionality with their own interfaces, existing infrastructure and brand.

What content does eXtend include?

eXtend does not actually include content. It allows ebrary’s database subscribers and partners to integrate ebrary content and functionality with their own Websites and workflow. The ebrary content that customers may integrate depends on which database they subscribe to. For more information about ebrary databases visit www.ebrary.com/libraries.
