About ebrary
Corporate Profile

ebrary develops software and services for the secure online access and delivery of authoritative copyrighted content. ebrary has created the ebrarian solution for channel partners and is working with publishers and other content providers to create a rich online library of copyrighted books, journals, periodicals and more that can be freely indexed by search engines via its open access model.

Using the ebrarian solution, publishers, Internet portals, academic institutions, libraries, e-learning companies, large corporations and other organizations can provide high-value, focused content to attract and retain customers, increase sales and make their Website properties more valuable to advertisers. ebrary’s channel partner strategy benefits publishers and other content providers by opening additional channels to increase online access and sales while protecting copyrights.

ebrary is also building an ebrary.com Website that revolutionizes research on the Web by combining copyright security, full-text search, innovative reference tools and a rich collection of authoritative content. ebrary.com patrons can browse, view and search documents without pre-payment or subscription fees, paying only for the convenience of copying or printing information they need. Both ebrary.com and the ebrarian solution are powered by ebrary InfoTools™, ebrary’s innovative comprehension and reference tools that allow Internet users to dynamically interact with the content at the word level.

ebrary is privately held and is funded by Random House Ventures LLC, Pearson plc and McGraw-Hill.

The ebrarian Solution

ebrary partners with the world’s largest publishers and academic presses including Random House, Pearson plc, McGraw-Hill, Taylor & Francis, Cambridge University Press and others to create a rich, online collection of authoritative, copyrighted books, journals, periodicals and more. By combining this high-value content with powerful research and comprehension software, ebrary offers partners a powerful and flexible platform for e-content delivery.

Channel partners can improve Website traffic and profitability by providing access to relevant, authoritative content contained within the ebrary collection, utilize the ebrarian software to securely distribute their own content to target markets, or a combination of both. Partners can leverage ebrary’s photocopy acquisition model or determine what payment models are appropriate to their businesses.

ebrarian Features and Benefits

The ebrarian solution supports a customizable business model through business rules that allow publishers and channel partners to specify how much content can be viewed or purchased, as well as the price of acquiring content.

ebrarian is powered by ebrary InfoTools™, which provides advanced exploration and comprehension capabilities. Users can interact with content down to the word level to obtain definitions, translations, biographical information, maps and more; easily navigate through the content; and access additional materials available on the Web via an intuitive interface.

The ebrarian solution leverages PDF technology, so content is presented true to the original design of the printed document.

ebrarian’s real time activity reports on document viewing, usage, micro-transactions and purchases provide valuable data for channel partners to make informed buying and marketing decisions, while protecting user privacy.

Open Access Model

ebrarian supports an open access model that enables search engines such as Google, Yahoo!, Excite and other Websites with search capabilities to freely index content, and any Website can provide links directly to high-value documents. This open access model benefits search engines by enabling them to increase site traffic, provides additional revenue streams for channel partners and publishers, and provides a convenient way for end-users to find and access the information they need online.

Company History

Christopher Warnock conceived of the ebrary business while working on his undergraduate degree at the University of Utah. His idea was to make information held in books, magazines, and newspapers accessible via the computer, to better enable people to perform research.

After spending several years at Adobe and then in the publishing industry, he approached both the University of Utah and Stanford University, with a project proposal to develop an on-line research environment. Stanford had been awarded a grant from the Mellon Foundation to develop the methodology for publishers to submit their work to servers for distribution within a University Library environment.

Warnock believes that the Internet was created with the promise of democratizing information. His goal is to help the Internet reach its full potential by enabling worldwide access to a comprehensive online library of authoritative, copyrighted content. In February 1999, Warnock and Kevin Sayar founded ebrary.
